Education, Storytelling & Engagement

The Experience That Defines the Tobacconist

Education, storytelling and engagement are what tobacconists do best and above all. That is the experience that drives customers into our stores instead of into an algorithm, a discount website or a cigar of the month club.

In the world of luxury tobacco, products alone do not build culture. Knowledge does. Meaning does. Story does.

Tobacconists stand before customers every day, getting feedback, listening, absorbing and thoughtfully distilling information on an individual basis. There are no shortcuts when providing face to face service. There is no hiding behind screens or advertisements. There is only authenticity, accountability and consistency.

That is where our culture lives.

Education Is the Foundation

Consumers today are extraordinarily well informed. In fact, one of the greatest challenges facing retail tobacconists is also one of the most exciting facets of our industry: the depth of passion and knowledge among luxury tobacco enthusiasts.

It is hard to imagine another consumer base that studies, debates and dissects products with the same intensity as pipe and cigar lovers.

But information alone is not education.

The internet is saturated with opinion, bias and hyperbole. Brands naturally promote themselves. Forums amplify personal preference. Inaccuracies circulate easily. Many consumers absorb flawed information without realizing it.

This is where professional tobacconists become indispensable.

Education is the foundation of credibility. It allows the tobacconist to distinguish between fact and opinion, substance and marketing, tradition and myth. It transforms scattered information into structured understanding.

A great tobacconist does not simply repeat what they have read. They interpret. They contextualize. They guide.

Storytelling Gives Education Meaning

Education without storytelling becomes sterile data. Storytelling without education becomes marketing fluff.

The balance is where engagement is created.

When a tobacconist explains the migration of Cuban seed to Nicaragua, the difference between Sumatra and Broadleaf, or why a particular vitola performs differently, the product becomes more than tobacco wrapped in leaf. It becomes a profound narrative grounded in knowledge.

Customers are not just purchasing a cigar. They are participating in an experience. They are broadening their palate. They are refining their understanding.

And they return because that experience cannot be replicated online.

Engagement Is Earned

Engagement is not forced. It is earned through professionalism, consistency and genuine care.

Tobacconists must be accountable to their customers every single day. We stand behind our recommendations. We adjust when feedback demands it. We grow alongside our clientele.

It sounds simple, but it requires discipline and commitment.

At Tobacconist University, we believe tobacconists are the keystone of our industry. We strive to support and defend them because when the professional tobacconist thrives, the culture thrives.

Our certifications are not decorative credentials. They contribute to your credibility. They become part of your story when serving customers. They reinforce that you are committed to substance over hype and knowledge over noise. GET CERTIFIED!

Great tobacconists understand the difference between information and education. Through storytelling and engagement, they help customers navigate between the good and the bad, always striving to broaden experience and enhance enjoyment.

Always be educating, and you will flourish as a tobacconist.

Why Get Certified? Building A Culture Of Professionalism

What is certification?  Why should you be certified?  And how do you become certified?  These are the questions TU President and Founder Jorge L. Armenteros, CMT answers in this video interview.

Whether they choose to get certified to strengthen their business, brand, and professionalism or to take advantage of the promotional value provided by TU, over 1200 tobacconists have already answered these questions for themselves.  But, every day legislators, special interest groups, bureaucrats and the nanny state try to usurp your professional and individual rights, disparage the tobacconist profession, and enact new taxes.  TU exists to educate consumers, professionals, legislators, and the entire world about premium and luxury tobacco products and their history.  Without education, there will be no salvation!

Of course, if you don't believe in a code of ethics and standards, professionalism, or excellence, then certification is not for you...

"The luxury and premium tobacco industry will not exist without the retail tobacconist"

The Little Pin That Could

In almost a decade we have certified dozens of Tobacconists in Princeton, NJ and in Pennsylvania. By the end of this year we will complete the first generation of our four college Academic Curriculum. In addition we will, in all probability, have over one hundred Certified Retail Tobacconist individuals (CRT) throughout the country by the end of 2008. This is a small, but historic step, in a long and uphill journey. This generation of Certified Tobacconists will wear the first ever Tobacconist University Certified pins (see Certified logo in sidebar). These are the same antique brass type pins that U.S. Senators and Congressman wear on their lapels, and to me they are equally special.

I am writing today because I just approved the proof for the pin and it prompted me to think a little about its significance. I know that the pin is a reflection of academic achievement, our adherence to the Code of Ethics & Standards, and also a symbol of pride, sacrifice, and accomplishment. We are proud because we work in an industry filled with generous and extraordinary people (both producers and consumers) as well as with special products. We sacrifice income, honor, and public credibility every day because tobacco has become ‘anathema to our modern society’. Now, through our bona fide accomplishments, luxury Tobacconists can take back their integrity and place in society as esteemed professionals; no less than sommeliers and chefs. Above all, we are individuals who have chosen to work at what we love and to follow our passions.

This brings me back to the pin. The pin is for Retail Tobacconists; those who serve their customers in ‘Brick and Mortar’ tobacco shops. Frankly, we may be a dying breed. Over the last decade we have seen the proliferation of Internet mail order and anti-smoking laws: both of these are formidable forces. As if the anti-smoking laws weren’t enough, the Internet threatens to commoditize the products we sell, and Retailers are challenged to provide increasing value to our customers: a challenge we can live up to. When a customer sees the pin, they will learn that their Tobacconist goes to great lengths to serve them. Customers will then realize the same educational resources their Tobacconist used are freely available to them. If we can educate and enhance appreciation then we can change the culture we live in: one Tobacconist at a time, one Customer at a time.

Soooo…. Look for the Pin.
